Moss Wall and Live Plants at Milan Design Week: The "Break down the Boundaries" Installation

How greenery can transform a temporary installation into an immersive experience between nature, design and inclusion

During Milan Design Week 2026, the exhibition-event INTERNI Materiae placed matter at the centre of design research, interpreting it as a physical, cultural and experimental element. Within this context, Break down the Boundaries, an installation designed by Marco Merendi and Diego Vencato for Stannah, explores the overcoming of physical, social and cultural boundaries. The Joya stairlift chair is removed from its purely functional dimension and placed inside an enchanted garden, where mobility, accessibility and design enter into dialogue with nature. The stairlift thus becomes part of a designed landscape: a technical element reinterpreted through a more sensitive, inclusive and contemporary narrative.

Greenery as a Design Material

The botanical component played a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the installation. Verde Verticale created a composition combining moss wall, trailing preserved greenery and live potted plants, giving form to a natural, scenographic environment aligned with the message of the project. The preserved moss introduces a soft, compact and continuous surface; its organic texture creates a natural backdrop with strong visual impact, enhancing the space and reinforcing the immersive character of the installation. The trailing preserved greenery adds movement, lightness and verticality to the composition, helping to create a more spontaneous and enveloping effect. Alongside the preserved elements, the live potted plants introduce volume, vitality and authenticity. Placed within Paolelli Outdoor containers, they complete the botanical composition and make the space richer, more material and more engaging.

A Balanced Botanical Composition

The combination of preserved greenery and live plants creates an effective balance between scenic impact, aesthetic stability and natural presence. This solution is particularly suitable for temporary installations, where visual continuity, compositional order and strong communicative value are essential. Preserved moss and preserved green walls make it possible to create refined and long-lasting scenographies without requiring irrigation or agronomic maintenance during the event, while live plants add a dynamic and sensory component that makes the environment more authentic and memorable. In Break down the Boundaries, greenery supports a deeply human message: overcoming limits, making spaces more accessible and imagining inclusive, sustainable mobility. The dialogue between nature, technology and design transforms a functional device into part of a broader story, where greenery becomes a means of connection between people, architecture and the environment.

Tailored Botanical Solutions

The project confirms the value of tailored botanical solutions for events, showrooms, corporate spaces and hospitality projects. Whether through a preserved moss wall, trailing preserved greenery, live plants or a hybrid composition, greenery can become a powerful design tool, capable of transforming space, strengthening its identity and making it immediately recognizable.
